PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat today said that he wanted a debate with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak so that he can pose two questions to the Umno president.

"I just want to ask two things - why reject Islam and embrace nationalism, and what is wrong with the policy implemented by PAS, especially in Kelantan," he said, as quoted by Bernama .

pas nik aziz speech 060609 03 Nik Aziz, also the Kelantan menteri besar, has invited Najib for a debate after Umno Youth had lodged a police report him for allegedly making seditious remarks.

The police report was based on a speech by Nik Aziz where he had allegedly compared Umno with communism and deviant teaching.

Nik Aziz also said that he had sent an official letter to Najib on the debate but has yet to receive any reply.

He added that he was willing to meet Najib to discuss the proposed debate and its guidelines.

"We have been wanting to debate with Umno since PAS' inception in 1951," he said.

Nik Aziz said there would be no end to the standoff between PAS and Umno if the two parties did not come face-to-face in a debate.

Unity talks did not take off

He also rejected claims that the debate invitation was to divert attention from the collapse of the proposed unity government talks between the two parties.

The unity talks were proposed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and backed by his deputy Nasharuddin Mat Isa.

While Najib and other Umno leaders welcomed the talks, Nik Aziz and several other senior leaders in PAS were vehemently against the proposal.

Subsequently Pakatan Rakyat also dismissed holding any talks with Umno and Hadi was forced to put an end to his proposal.

Nik Aziz was one of the most vocal opponents of the unity talks and had not minced his words by hitting out at his own party leaders for proposing the discourse with their rival.
