Kuala Selangor registered an unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) reading of a 106 today with Port Klang coming close with 91.

NONE Air quality is deemed unhealthy at readings of 101 to 200, very unhealthy from 201 to 300 and hazardous if above 300.

Good air quality was recorded in Kedah, Perlis and Penang but the rest of the country was classified in moderate range.

Nationwide, 42 out of 49 areas where air quality measurements were taken fall into the 'moderate' category.

Readings of between 0 and 50 shows good air quality while 51 to 100 is considered moderate.

Situation okay in Sarawak and Sabah

In Sarawak, Samarahan, while still within the moderate range, had the highest reading (82) followed by Sibu (71) and Sarikei (59).

A combination of windy conditions, dry weather and the intensity of hot spots in Sumatra is to be blamed for dust and pollutants here.

Open burning of forests in Sumatra had been responsible for the smog in neighbouring Southeast Asian countries.

A spokesperson for environment department said that the situation is expected to remain the same if wind directions do not change.
