The Internal Security Act will not be abolished but there are chances of the act of being amended or even renamed to suit the present time, said Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today.

He said that laws like ISA were needed to allow for a person to be questioned before a matter or case could be taken to court.

"The act is meant to ensure economic and political stability so that there are no problems related to religion, race and culture," he was quoted as saying by Bernama .

He also said that people should not be afraid of ISA if they had not committed any wrong.

"I speak from my experience in 1988. Although I was detained under the ISA I accepted the situation.

"When I was questioned and investigated I was of the opinion that the police did their job professionally," he added.

NONE Bernama also quoted Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Ahmad Maslan as saying that the opposition had merely wanted an opportunity to have a demonstration.

He said that they knew that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had promised a review of the preventive law.

"Actually they should give their views wisely, in writing, using facts if they wanted to make any suggestions, not by troubling the people, till the roads are jammed," he said.
