Six reformasi activists who are being held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) would not be allowed to meet their families and lawyers in the future, should they embark on a hunger strike to mark the anniversary of their arrests.

Their lawyer R Sivarasa told malaysiakini today that the six, being detained at the Kamunting detention centre in Perak, were informed of this by the camps officials during a meeting yesterday.

According to Sivarasa, the officials also said the detainees would be refused access to television and newspapers for the duration of their strike, which is scheduled to begin on April 10

The six detainees are Keadilan leaders Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, Saari Sungib, Hishamuddin Rais, Lokman Noor Adam, Badrul Amin Baharon and Tian Chua.

All of them, who are serving a two-year detention, were detained last year for their alleged involvement in a plot to oust the government through militant means.

Anwars surgery

Last Wednesday, the six announced that they will start a hunger strike on Apr 10 to highlight their demands to be released or be charged in court for their alleged crimes.

They are also demanding that jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim be permitted to undergo a spinal surgery abroad.

Kamunting detention centre officials could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, S Arutchelvam, an activist with the Abolish ISA movement, said there is no certain date set for the end of the hunger strike.

We dont know how long because this is to demand for their release, he told malaysiakini .

He added the detainees supporters would also participate in the hunger strike and to mark its commencement, a vigil will be held on April 10 outside the Kamunting detention centre.
