An opposition party leader who is being held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) obtained a few hours of reprieve today to attend his daughters wedding ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

Keadilan former supreme council member Saari Sungib left the Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping, Perak, early this morning in a prison van. He arrived at his home in Taman Sri Ukay, Ampang, at 1pm, where he was received by family and friends.

Saari, 45, a father of seven, then proceeded to solemnise the marriage of his eldest daughter, Nur Anfal, 22, a graduate of University of Northumbria in Newcastle, United Kingdom.

Keadilan secretary-general Sahri Bahri, who was present at the ceremony, said his family was very happy to see Saari, who has been held since April 10 last year.

He looks fine but he has lost about 10kg, Sahri told malaysiakini , adding that Saari was expected to depart back to the detention camp at 3pm today.

Plot to topple govt

The other reformasi activists under detention are Keadilan leaders Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, Tian Chua, Lokman Noor Adam, Dr Badrul Amin Baharon and malaysiakini columnist-cum-filmmaker Hishamuddin Rais.

All of them, who are serving a two-year detention, were detained last year for alleged involvement in a plot to topple the government using militant means.

Last Wednesday, the six announced that they will start a hunger strike on April 10, the first anniversary of their detention, to highlight their demands to be released or to be charged in court for their alleged crimes.

They are also demanding that jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim be permitted to undergo a spinal surgery abroad.

However, according to their lawyer, R Sivarasa, the six have been warned that they would be stripped of their visitation rights if they went ahead with the hunger strike.

Supporters of the detainees are also planning to hunger-strike to seek their release. To mark the commencement of the event, a vigil will be held on April 10 outside the Kamunting Detention Centre.
