On Secret poll on two 'errant' MACC advisers raises ruckus

SP Kanesin: MACC should first conduct a email survey of public's perception of MACC. Question like whether MACC is proficient in its work, whether MACC is independent and not subservient to some unknown masters, whether MACC is really professional in its conduct... They should first conduct a survey among the public, rather then doing an email survey among the advisors who have no say at all in MACC.

Gan Kein Bing: Do the advisers have any power over MACC conduct and practices? Is MACC obligated to follow their advice? If not, what is the point? Don't be a fig leaf for the MACC.

Hibiscus: Maybe the fellow who sent out the poll email acted on his/her own. Maybe he is instructed to do so by people outside of MACC. Will the MACC investigate who initiated it? Barely a year old, the MACC has generated so much mistrust for itself. Does it not care that its reputation has gone to the dogs even before it has made any impact to reduce corruption? What is its KPI? Does it not have a sense of shame?

And we thought we would see improvements with ACA being replaced by MACC. This is worse than a prostitute dressed in white for a wedding proclaiming she is still a virgin. Yes, I agree heads must roll in MACC for this act of misconduct if the commission is to have any shred of professionalism and honour left.

Bob: Tan Sri Phang, please do not resign. If you resign, it means you are taking responsibility for those causing the death of Teoh Beng Hock in MACC.

Beng Hock’s death shall be answered by those who are managing MACC in crooked ways. Advisers shall not take responsibility on behalf of MACC. If the heads could not perform or perform beyond their jurisdiction, advisers shall propose the heads to be sacked and jailed.

Rakyat Malaysia need honourable and caliber people like you to clean up and restructure the whole department. Failure would mean our future generation, and the generations to come, will be in deep, deep trouble.

Please don't give up, pursue justice and righteousness till the end for the sake of our country and future generations.

Stewart Chan: I agree with Phang on not running away. My take on this is that the ‘secret email’ is a red herring to divert the heat away from MACC on the Beng Hock case. Do not be fooled. The important thing is that the rest of the Advisory Panel members must be united. Make "noise" when they don't see justice and appropriateness in MACC's actions. No matter how "impotent" these noises are, at least there is a "constituted" body to expose them.

Ong Guan Sin: I agree with Phang that, "we are here because we feel we can make a difference." At the same time, the advisory members, being distinguished members of the society, must be wary of lending legitimacy to MACC, a body that's losing its public standing. When indeed they feel they can't make a difference in MACC’s fight against corruption, I hope the members will be brave enough to stand up and exit en masse.

Jamie Yeow: It’s unbelievable, unethical and highly irregular of the MACC secretariat to do this illegal, uncalled for poll. As Phang correctly surmised: who does the MACC think they are (in assuming) that the Advisory Panel reports to them? Some of these MACC guys must be brought to book without any further delays as it is in their warped minds that they are the boss, that they are all high and mighty, and that they are untouchable!

These underlying attitudes are, regrettably, no different to the government's views and disdain of Suhakam - that these bodies are just set up to please the citizens, but they are not to be effective watchdogs, and/or be conscience of the country's human rights and corruption problems. Very thorough mindset changes are absolutely necessary to weed out these recalcitrants in MACC and other similar bodies if Malaysia is ever to have a truly transparent society.

Ong: Do all those supposedly respectable personalities realise that their continued membership in the various MACC advisory boards has not help the MACC in improving its performance? Instead, their membership may have helped to give some undeserved legitimacy to acts so far committed by MACC. They should quit their meaningless positions as advisers if their advices are not accepted and not welcomed by by the MACC management.

Kevin Phang: MACC is more interested in investigating cases of RM2.400 spent for buntings and some flowers... these are lesser crimes compared to RM10 million ‘donation’.

Master: Is MACC only competent enough to investigate those involving thousands of ringgit? Can someone get the a 12-digit calculator to count those in millions and billions?

Remo Williams Uad: The MACC keeps blaming all and sundry for the hole it has screwed itself into without any help from anyone. For heavens’ sake, get your act together and follow procedures to the letter. The PM's reaction in this matter should be to throw the book at the officers involved if that is the findings of the royal commission.

If they have not followed procedure and are responsible for TBH's death they should bear the full brunt of the law. The PM has other more pressing matters affecting the country then to allow this fiasco to tarnish his office and image. You follow the law, we protect you, you break the law, "you're up the creek with no paddle". The same rules apply to the police, otherwise God help us all.
