Two Barisan Nasional supporters were slightly injured after they were allegedly assaulted by a group of suspected PAS supporters in Bukit Indera Muda here during polling today for the Permatang Pasir state by-election.
Afzan Nasir Ibrahim, 27, and Muhd Yusri Rosli, 19, said they were injured in the left arm and left wrist, respectively, after the group of 15 to 20 people allegedly hurled stones at them and assaulted them with motorcycle crash helmets.
They claimed the incident occurred at around noon when a group of 50 to 60 Kepala Batas Umno Youth members on motorcycles, who were part of the BN machinery for the Permatang Pasir by-election, wanted to park their machines in front of a house opposite the BN operations room there.
Afzan, when met at the Seberang Jaya Hospital here, said several members of the group prevented them from parking their machines there, which led to a commotion.
He said that as they were about to leave, the group threw stones at them and attacked them with the helmets.
Police report lodged
After receiving out-patient treatment at the hospital, both Afzan and Muhd Yusri, accompanied by Kepala Batas Umno Youth chief Reezal Merican Naina Merican, lodged a report at the Seberang Jaya police station.
The police media liaison officer for the by-election, Supt Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif, confirmed the report and said the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
The by-election, held following the death of PAS state assemblyperson Mohd Hamdan Abd Rahman on July 31, is a straight fight between Mohd Salleh Man, 52, of PAS and Rohaizat Othman, 38, of the BN. - Bernama
