MCA vice-president Liow Tiong Lai today proposed to the supporters of party president Ong Tee Keat and sacked deputy president Dr Chua Soi Lek to come up with a satisfactory agenda to avoid having two extraordinary general meetings (EGMs).

He said both parties should sit down and discuss the matter and any resolution achieved should be well supported and endorsed.

"There is no need to have two EGMs in this case if we follow the party constitution.

This is just a disciplinary matter and not a (leadership) crisis," Liow told reporters after presenting surgical masks to schools within the Klang parliamentary constituency.

Ong yesterday directed party secretary-general Wong Foon Meng to call for an EGM within 30 days.

The agenda of the EGM has not been fixed yet, but Bernama learnt that high on the list is to seek the delegates' endorsement of the presidential council's decision in sacking Chua as well as a vote of confidence for Ong's leadership.

Ong's decision to call for an EGM comes in the wake of protests by Chua's supporters who have launched a signature campaign among the party delegates to call for an EGM.

Party observers said there were two possibilities - Chua's supporters might participate in the EGM called by the president or call for another EGM on their own if they were dissatisfied with the agenda set by the party secretary-general.

Liow also said that he did not want to see a split in the MCA and urged all party members and leaders to solve the issues and problems amicably.

"There is no such thing as team A or team B or a Tee Keat and Chua team in the MCA. We are all united in the party," he said, adding he respected Ong' s decision to conduct an EGM.
