Representatives from the Pakatan Rakyat Youth Movement handed a memo - protesting the extension of inspector general of police (IGP) Musa Hassan's contract - to the Home Ministry in Putra Jaya today.

NONE PKR Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin who led the delegation, said that the re-appointment of the IGP "goes against the 1Malaysia principle of people first, performance now."

As IGP, Musa's performance has been dismal, he said, adding that "it is a well known fact that under Musa's stewardship of the police, the crime rate has increased."

Based on this, Shamsul stressed that the IGP's reappointment causes valid concerns for the future and safety of society.

More over, said the PKR Youth head, Musa has been accused multiple times as allegedly having links to the criminal underworld.

In relation to which he mentioned the statutory declaration allegedly made by an underling against the nation's top cop, now making the rounds in blogs and online sites.

IGP should be beyond reproach

According to him, the onus was on the government and the police as well as its IGP to clear Musa's name. However no investigations as yet have been launched, nor were the allegations disputed.

musa hassan pc 021107 think Shamsul said that these allegations puts more then a shadow of doubt over Musa's integrity. He explained that as the man in charge of the police, he should be beyond reproach, not muddied with worrying allegations.

In view of these above, Pakatan youth strongly urges the government to reconsider its re-appointment of Musa as IGP, he added.

The group handed over the memo to a representative from the ministry at about 3pm.

Accompanying Shamsul also from PKR Youth were exco Ramlan Ros, deputy information chief Shamsul Hidayat Mohd Sharif, and the movement's Selangor head Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainudin. Bahau assemblyperson Teo Kok Seong made up the deputation from DAP youth.

The memo was received by Home Ministry Secretary for Police Affairs Awang Din.

The document is the latest in a series of protests against the re-appointment of Musa as IGP. The top cop has been under fire with many questioning his performance in fighting crime and the various allegations linking him with the criminal underworld.

‘ BN first performance later'

Ahmad Subki Yusof who arrived after the memo was delivered, said "Of late, the police seem more adept at stopping demonstrations and defending the government than stopping crime like drug trafficking and snatch thefts."

He also questioned the motive behind the extension of the IGP's contract, as having hidden intentions and not in line with putting the interest of the public first.

According to him, it is as if the government's intent is to protect its own interest over anything else.

If this was the case, he added, then it is not ‘people first performance now', but rather "BN first, performance later."

He was there as the lone representative from the PAS Youth Movement.
