Umno to finalise constitutional amendments
The Umno political bureau will meet on Friday to finalise proposals for amendments to the party constitution which were discussed at the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday.
Party treasurer Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the conclusions and decisions of the political bureau would be tabled again at the next Umno supreme council meeting before being tabled at the special general assembly of the party next month.
"On Oct 23, we will have the Umno general assembly and the first day will discuss the motion to debate the presidential policy speech. On the following day, we will discuss amendments to the (party) constitution," he told reporters here today.
He said the amendments, particularly on the abolition of the quota system, would enable new members especially the young generation of Umno to offer themselves to contest for top posts in the party.
"So the party's rejuvenation process can be speeded up. This is aimed at strengthening Umno as the thrust in the country's administration," said Husni, who is also Finance Minister II.
The next election for top posts in Umno is scheduled for 2011.
