MIC, touted as the largest Indian-based party in the country, has imposed a three-term limit for the position of president starting this year.

mic election 120909 najib samy It also imposed the same three-term tenure for all division chairpersons but they would be eligible to re-contest after a lapse of one term. Each term is three years.

These were among some of the amendments to party constitution passed by the party at its 63rd general assembly, held at the Putra World Trade Centre.

The amendments received the thumbs-up from some 1,500 delegates and were duly passed.

Previously, there were no provisions that limit the tenure of a person to hold the party's top post, which is currently held by S Samy Vellu since 1981.

Apart from these two amendments, the party also amended the provision pertaining to the number of delegates a branch could have based on the number of members.

Previously a branch was entitled to have a delegate for every 100 members but now the proportion is amended to one delegate per 60 members.

"Subject to the approval of the central working committee, a new branch may be established at such locality as the divisional congress may think appropriate, provided the application for the formation of such new branch congress is made in writing to the divisional secretary and signed by at least 60 persons in that locality," the amendment read.

The amendment also allowed for the applications of membership through the Internet but they must be approved by the party's central working committee, the party's highest decision making body.
