A special parliamentary session must be convened soon for the government to explain its refusal to set up a royal commission to investigate the Port Klang Free Trade Zone (PKFZ) scandal, said PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar today.

Mahfuz said the special session was necessary to enable the members of parliament to debate the formation of the special task force announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak last Wednesday.

Mahfuz omar handing over to idris ahmad pas hq 220609 01 Speaking to reporters at PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today, Mahfuz said the government must also prepare a report on the outcome of the investigations carried out by other bodies previously in the handling of the PKFZ case such as the report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the task force, to be presented to Parliament for debate.

Mahfuz said PAS would ask its lawyers to scrutinise the provisions under the existing law to enable the commission to be set up.

The PKFZ aims to become a hub for the transfer of goods to ships and was built on 405 hectares of land for the establishment of warehouses, office blocks and a four-star hotel.

However, it has been shrouded in controversy following the escalation of its construction costs from RM2.5 billion to RM4.6 billion.
