The opposition's attempt to form the Pakatan Rakyat in Sarawak to face the coming state election will not pose a threat to the state BN, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president Abang Johari Openg said.

He said the four opposition parties - DAP, PKR, Sarawak National Party (Snap) and PAS could not work together because although their leaders were “sleeping on the same pillow, they had different dreams”.

"The disunited opposition will not pose a threat to the state BN in the coming state election. They cannot reach a consensus and they don't have common platform and ideology," he told reporters after presenting a total of RM125,000 of government grant to welfare and religious associations and bodies in Kuching today.

Abang Johari, who is the state housing minister, said the state BN had a proven track record of winning the elections and serving the people.

"We are confident as we (BN Sarawak) have done our part. Let the people assess (BN's track record)," he said.

Shaky start

Yesterday, leaders of four opposition parties had a meeting here, chaired by PKR vice-president and PKR Sarawak leadership council chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayup in an attempt to form Pakatan Rakyat in Sarawak.

In efforts to form a strong alliance in Sarawak to face the coming state election, due in 2011, PKR initiated the meeting to discuss the seat allocation for a one-on-one contest against BN in the state election.

However, the effort to form Pakatan to take on BN Sarawak had a shaky start yesterday as they failed to reach a consensus.

It is believed the source of friction was the overlapping claims over seats between the DAP and PKR.
