Suhakam names workgroup heads
Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) today named the commissioners who will head the four working groups. The full lineup of the groups would be known later this month.
Commissioner Prof Mohd Hamdan Adnan takes over from former commissioner Anuar Zainal Abidin and will also replace Harun Hashim as the chairperson of the Complaints and Inquiries Working Group.
The other members of the group are chairman of the Sabah Public Services Commission Simon Sipaun, Sarawak medical practitioner Dr Mohd Hirman Ritom Abdullah, director of the Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim) Dr Abdul Monir Yaacob, retired National Population and Family Development Board director-general Dr Raj Abdul Karim and Sisters in Islam executive director Zainah Anwar.
Two more commissioners
According to Hamdan, the commission is considering assigning another two commissioners to the working group.
Meanwhile, University Malaya lecturer Prof Chiam Heng Keng will continue to chair the education working group, while retired judge Harun Hashim will now head the law reform working group, said Hamdam.
The treaties and international instruments working group will be headed by retired Treasury deputy secretary-general Ramon Navaratnam.
On Tuesday, Suhakam secretary Kamaruddin Mohd Baria told malaysiakini the list will only be finalised after the next meeting of the commissioners on May 20.
Zainah had also said she would remain with the law reform working group and would be joined by Harun Hashim and Monir.
