State Umno liaison committees would be briefed on proposed amendments to the party constitution before being tabled at a special Umno general assembly in October said Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said the move was to arrive at a unanimous decision on the amendments to the constitution before being tabled.

Although there are differences in opinion, we want everyone to reach a conclusive decision that can be accepted by everybody," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Civil Services Conference at the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was commenting on talk that some Umno divisions were not in favour of the proposed amendments to the party's constitution, especially on the election of posts in the party.

Muhyiddin said the party had given an opportunity for every state to go through the draft copy of the proposed amendments suggested by the constitution amendment committee headed by Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.

"Almost all the draft copies distributed to states has been returned to the headquarters and we have attended a briefing by Hishammuddin during the political bureau meeting and a number of decisions were made on the selection process.

"Whether the quota system will be retained or abolished, and how the party can be rejuvenated through a more democratic and transparent manner and more importantly empower the grassroots members to offer themselves to contest for top posts and determine the party's survival in the country's political landscape," he said.

PKR Youth proposes rotation in CMs

Meanwhile, asked of his opinion on Penang PKR Youth's call for the chief minister's post to be rotated through a new devised formula so that all races would have a chance to become chief ministers, Muhyiddin said it was up to them to decide.

"That is their view, I do not have any rights to give views on that matter because PKR is still new while we (BN) have been around for very long and always made decisions based on the needs of the people," he said.

The BN has vast experience in dealing such matters and always based decisions on the political situation and administration need of the respective states.

Yesterday, PKR Youth chief Mohd Yusmadi Mohd Yusuff ( left ) who is also member of parliament for Balik Pulau said a new political formula was needed to replace that practiced by BN which gave the chief minister's post to a Chinese and deputy chief minister's post to a Malay.

Mohd Yusmadi had said that it was about time such political ideology be abolished to give way to the appointment of leaders from any race.
