The Penang government today repeated its call to the federal government to expedite an allocation of RM25 million for heritage conservation activities in the state.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said heritage conservation and revitalisation involved a huge cost.

penang pulau pinang old heritage pre war buildings 160307 01 "We hope that the money which had promised earlier, will be delivered to the state government as soon as possible," he told reporters after opening officiating the Penang International Conference on Sustainable Cultural Development here today.

Penang is one of two states in the country recognised by Unesco as World Heritage sites but has yet to receive a federal allocation for conservation purposes.

Lim added that Malacca, the other state given the status, had received an allocation of RM30 million from the federal government for conservation purposes.

He also said that four developers carrying out projects in the heritage zone of Georgetown had agreed to comply with conditions set by Unesco for development in heritage sites and that one of them was seeking compensation for the losses the company would incur in doing so.
