Months after the handcuffed abduction of businessman R Ravi Shanker by five men, his case has been taken up by an unregistered political party asking: what has the police done so far?

Human Rights Party (HRP) president P Uthayakumar ( left ) who is the lawyer representing Shanker's wife, Sheila Kaur , said today he had written a letter on his client's behalf to Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein urging his intervention in the case.

Shankar, 40, also known as Bangsar Shan, was assaulted and handcuffed before being taken away by five men in front of his wife and children on Aug 29.

The five who claimed to be policemen also held a 'parang' to his wife's neck to silence her and her children.

In a letter to the Home ministry today, Sheila requested that the ministry appoint a Special Committee to look into the matter.

"Article 5 of the Federal Constitution provides for the right to life and Article 8 of the same provides for the equal protection under the law," stated the letter.

She claimed police involvement in the matter and expressed disappointment at the Kajang police's lackadaisical attitude.

She also alleged that the police did not investigate a red Proton car which the assailants had knocked in their haste to get away which could be clear indication of their aim.

Before the incident, Shanker had given her a list of names with telephone numbers, telling her that they would be the most likely to be responsible if anything untoward happened to him, said Sheila.

Her husband has yet to be released from captivity and no arrest has been made so far.

Sheila has lodged three police reports so far, sent two memos to Bukit Aman and written twice to the home minister, said Uthayakumar.

"She filed the third police report on Sept 29. She is worried as she does not know if her husband is alive or not," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

All those affected by this incident, including the wife and the legal fraternity hold the inspector general of police (IGP) Musa Hassan responsible for this case and urged him to step down.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sakaruddin Che Mood confirmed that a police report had been made by Sheila early September.

He denied police involvement, saying that Ravi Shankar has never been arrested or detained by his men.

"He was never with us. He was kidnapped by a group of men," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

When asked about the current status of his investigations, Sakaruddin declined to comment as the case has been taken over by higher-ranking officers.

However, he said that their initial investigations had shown that Shankar had not been harmed but may be held by "gangs due to internal disputes".

In response to the alleged use of parang by the so-called police, he said: "Why should we use parang when we have all the powers of law to arrest or detain suspects? No, we don't use parang."
