In a bold suggestion that could spark controversy, an Umno delegate from Selangor has today proposed that the federal government bleed Pakatan Rakyat-led constituencies dry.

umno agm egm 151009 delegates According to Shukur Idris, an assemblyperson for Kuang, this move would allow the people to see the differences in administration between Barisan Nasional and their archrivals Pakatan.

"I urge the federal government to stop any development allocation to the constituencies that we have lost in the last general election," he said during a policy speech debate at Umno Annual General Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Although his remark was welcomed with a pause instead of cheers, Shukur went on, saying: "Let them (opposition) handle it themselves".

"However, we still want the federal government to continue the allocation to Barisan-led constituencies so the people could see the difference," he said.

Shukur also suggested that the government ministries to follow in the steps of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Mohd Noh Omar who had, before this, allocated RM100,000 of agriculture funds through Umno divisions.

According to him, this would allow the Umno leaders to serve the people directly rather than making the people resort to government agencies to seek for funds.

Focus more on welfare

Since Selangor was taken over by Pakatan in the last general election, the state government led by PKR Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim focuses more on the welfare of the people rather than spending big money on development.

NONE Shukur noted that this is something that the federal government should emulate, as people more appreciate the welfare provided to them rather than being showered with development.

"For instance, when a senior citizen dies, the state government gives RM1000 immediately, while we only give them RM300.

"If they fill in the aid forms, the state government gives another RM1500 to them. This comparison is constantly made by the people against us," said Shukur.

With this, he called upon the federal government to stop focussing on allocating development funds to the people and pay attention on people's welfare instead.

"I hope the government could lessen the development allocation funds to us. Instead, focus more on the welfare so that we can compete with the state government in order to serve the people," he said.

On the same note, Shukur proposed that the government establish an urban Malay secretariat to prioritise the Malays in the urban areas in the wake of the economic liberalisation.
