Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today urged the party to change its approach and be more aggressive in facing elections. NONE

"We should change from being defensive to being offensive because the best form of defence is offence," he said in his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly.

In view of this, the 33-year-old politician proposed that the Youth set up a bilik perang (war room) to launch attacks in upcoming electoral battles and capture the votes of young people.

Following the sterling performance in Sunday's Bagan Pinang by-election, Khairy ( left ) is confident of roping in more votes for Umno from the younger generation.

"When PAS declared jihad (holy war) against us in Bagan Pinang, we stood steadfast in defending our party's dignity," he said.

Embrace the new media

The Umno Youth chief also stressed on the importance of understanding the worldview of young voters, which now stands at seven million.

He identified the youth's political DNA as being made up of ‘free, young, educated and cosmopolitan'.

Khairy said the new media was another crucial tool to reach out to young voters, as it is their main source of information.

Meanwhile, Puteri Umno chief Rosnah Rashid Shirlin stressed on the importance of quality than quantity in the wing's membership during her speech.
