The coming MCA extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will decide whether to support beleaguered president Ong Tee Keat or dissolve the central committee (CC), secretary-general Wong Foon Meng said.

The 2,380 central delegates would be asked to make such a choice.

He said the MCA headquarters was working to convene the EGM "as soon as possible".

Wong said he had not fixed a date for the coming EGM and was discussing with party legal chief Leong Tang Chong on the legal aspects of an EGM called by Ong.

The party secretary-general proposed to hold the EGM, together with the party's annual general meeting (AGM).

The AGM was scheduled on Oct 11, but postponed due to the Oct 10 EGM at which Ong lost a vote of no-confidence while former deputy president Dr Chua Soi Lek regained his membership but was rejected from returning to his post.

20 CC members want Ong out

At yesterday's 42-member CC meeting, Ong did not resign despite mounting calls while vice-president Liow Tiong Lai was elected deputy president.

Ong, who did not meet reporters after the meeting, announced over his blog that he was using his presidential privilege to call for an EGM, saying the outcome of the Oct 10 EGM was "inconclusive" and indicated that the grassroots were divided.

He had lost the vote of confidence by 14 votes at the EGM which was attended by 2,307 central delegates.

Wong confirmed that more than 20 CC members had signed a letter before yesterday's CC meeting to demand that the president quit.

"However, they did not show it (letter) during the CC meeting," he said.

He said the move by the CC members was to get Ong to respect the outcome of the Oct 10 EGM.
