When the Education Ministry's director of higher education Prof Dr Hassan Said announced the results of public university intake based on the 'merit' system three weeks ago, he could not possibly have thought then that the issue would explode the way it did.

What subsequently appeared in the media (until several newspapers were 'told' to play down the issue) was certainly a nightmare for the ministry and its officer-in-charge.
