Politicians need authorisation by the Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) to deliver sermons in mosques so that the teachings do not deviate from the true path of Islam.

Shah Alam parliamentary constituency coordinator Ahmad Nawawi M Zin said speakers should meet the conditions set by Mais.

azan islam call to prayer "Those who wish to deliver sermons need to be authorised and qualified as the sanctity of mosques must be protected to prevent it from being misued for politics," he said when opening the Kota Anggerik state constituency service counter in Shah Alam today.

Ahmad Nawawi, who is also Shah Alam Umno division chief, said politicians who wanted to deliver sermons should realise mosques were used to unite the community, not to spread lies.

He said only Mais was allowed to give authorisation, a move aimed at checking the spread of deviationist teachings in Selangor.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, recently reminded mosque officials to ensure that mosques were not used by politicians to divide the Muslim community.

He also urged Muslims to stop swearing in mosques as it not only hurt the feelings of others but also an insult to Islam.
