A parang wielding man broke into Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's residence in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur today.

The intruder entered the house at about 3.30pm and destroyed the patio glass door, a television set and a showcase in the living room.

Wan Azizah and her four children were in the house at the time of the incident and had sought shelter in one of the rooms.

The man had also tried in vain to break into the room that the five were hiding in.

It is learnt that neighbours alerted the police and the man was detained half an hour later.

When met, Wan Azizah said this was the second time the man had broken into the house. Two weeks ago, the man had smashed the guardhouse's window.

"We lodged a police report two weeks ago about the intruder. He has been loitering around the area then. But nothing has been done," she said.

'Anti-government'

Her eldest daughter, Nurul Izzah — who was not at home when the incident took place — said she panicked when her mother telephoned her.

"I was so worried. I thought about my father (jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim) immediately and wondered what he would think if he knew (about the incident)," she said.

A policeman at the scene said the suspect was picked up at a nearby shop. He declined to comment beyond saying that the matter will be investigated.

When malaysiakini asked the suspect why he did this, he calmly replied that he 'attacked' the house because its occupants were "anti-government".

The suspect, who said his name was 'Rahmat', is being held at the Brickfields district police headquarters for questioning.
