The Registrar of Societies (ROS) is prepared to go to court if MCA vice-president Liow Tiong Lai challenges its decision in reinstating Dr Chua Soi Lek as the party deputy president.

hishammuddin hussein home ministry 140409 talking Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the decision by ROS was based on three main factors - the country laws, the Societies Act 1996 and the MCA constitution.

"Should the matter be taken to court, we, at the ministry, and ROS will explain and defend the decision," he told a news conference at the Parliament lobby here today.

Yesterday, ROS announced that Chua, who was sacked as MCA deputy president last August and later reinstated only as a member in the party, was still the party deputy president.

Liow may take matter to court

Registrar Md Alias Kalil said being that there was no vacancy for the post as the decision on the resolution of the MCA extraordinary general meeting on Oct 10 did not fulfill the requirement for a two-thirds majority as provided for under Article 35 of the MCA Constitution.

His decision came hours before a crucial MCA central committee meeting and after the ROS had earlier said it would not intervene in the dispute.

Liow, who was appointed deputy president last month, has hinted that he would take the matter to court to challenge ROS’ decision.
