Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today the setting up of a special team was an initiative by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to improve the management of funds by elected representatives.

NONE He said the funds used by members of parliament and state assemblymen for the people were subject to certain conditions.

"Perhaps, the MACC can advise how MPs and state assemblypersons can improve (management of the funds) because the role of the elected representatives is to help the people," he told reporters before attending the summit in Istanbul.

Under the jurisdiction of MACC

Muhyiddin was asked to comment on the setting up of the MACC special team to check corruption, abuse of power and misappropriation of funds by elected representatives.

The team, managed by the MACC inspection and consulting division, would conduct an overall study of the rules, systems and procedures as well as the internal control mechanisms used by elected representatives in spending the funds allocated to them.

Muhyiddin said the setting up of the special team was under the jurisdiction of the MACC.

"From the government or Barisan Nasional’s aspect, we usually apply procedures established by the government," he said.

He said elected representatives required funds to meet the people's needs, adding that they understood the procedure on expenditure of funds. - Bernama
