Three MIC Youth members suffered injuries when they were set upon by a group of men, who were alleged to be PKR members.
The drama erupted outside the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya this afternoon when a MIC Youth delegation went there to submit a memorandum about a temple demolition in Selangor.
The delegation was led by the wing’s secretary C Sivaraj and his deputy V Mugilan.
After handing over the memorandum to PKR deputy secretary Sharifah Shahidah Syed Kamarulzaman, the MIC Youth members headed towards their vehicles parked nearby.
At this point, they were verbally abused by the men.
"The men were drunk. One of them brought an iron rod. Then it was a free for all fight," recalled K Novinthen, a MIC Youth member who witnessed the incident.
Meanwhile, Sivaraj told Malaysiakini that one of the men had warned them not to fool around with PKR.
The melee ended when policemen arrived at the scene.
Youth chief: This was planned
The three MIC members injured were Batu MIC Youth leader D Palakumaran, 38, his deputy and brother Tharmakumaran, 35 and N Ramu, 31.
A report was later lodged with the Tropicana police station.
In an immediate response, MIC Youth leader T Mohan accused the opposition party of orchestrating the attack. "It was planned," he said.
He added that MIC Youth would let the police investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, PKR communications director Jonson Chong said he could not confirm if the assailants were indeed party members.
"All I can say is that they were pro-Pakatan people and anti-MIC," he added.
Chong also expressed regret over the incident.
