PKR vice-president and Gombak MP Azmin Ali today said that he was ready to be investigated by the police over allegations he had accrued shares worth RM2 million in 1992.

He said that he had been investigated over the matter once in the past and was cleared by the police.

Stressing that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, Azmin said the allegations which resurfaced again this week was the work of his political enemies.

azmin ali pc in parliament 020709 02 The allegations first cropped up last Friday when former MIC Youth chief SA Vigneswaran questioned Azmin's ( left ) ownership of a large amount of shares he had purchased during his time as Anwar Ibrahim's aide.

Today, another former aide of Anwar, Anuar Shaari lodged a police report claiming that there were irregularities in the shares bought by Azmin between 1992 and 1994 when he was the private secretary to Anwar, who was the finance minister then.

According to Anuar, a large chunk of the shares were purchased under the name of Azmin's wife Shamshida Taharin.

He said Anwar should also he investigated as the shares were purchased when the former was serving as an aide to Anwar, who was also the deputy prime minister.

‘I don't know what else to do'

"I was investigated 11 years ago and subjected to a thorough probe by the authorities including the police on Sept 16, 1998. I was detained for eight days," said Azmin.

Going back to 1998 when Anwar was sacked from his deputy premiership, Azmin said the cops made an application in court to investigate all his properties.

Last week, Vigneswaran ( right ) said that Azmin and Shamshida owned shares worth more than RM9 million in total in the early 1990s.

Vigneswaran told a press conference that an envelope containing documents as well as receipts of the shares bought by the couple was delivered to his house by an unknown person.

He then called on Azmin to explain and verify the documents containing the breakdown of the number of shares the couple owned.

Azmin dismissed Vigneswaran and said that he would be pursuing legal action against him.

"I have spoken to my lawyers and he will be forwarding a letter of demand, possibly by tomorrow," said Azmin.

Document handed to police

Anuar meanwhile lodged his report at the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at Bukit Aman this morning.

He handed a copy of the original document on the matter to the police.

"This morning, I lodged a police report and handed a copy of the original document on the ownership of the shares which is widely being talked about to find out the truth because based on the document that I have, it looks like the original, but I'm not an expert to prove it," he told reporters at Bukit Aman.

"I'm linking Anwar because the document was dated 1992-1994 when Anwar was the Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, and Azmin Ali was also Anwar's secretary then," he said.
