Malaysia's auto sales rose 22.9 percent year-on-year in October, an industry group said today, marking signs of recovery for the industry which sank during the economic slowdown.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said sales of new motor vehicles increased to 46,092 units in October, up from 37,512 sold in the same month last year.

"Sales volume for November 2009 is expected to recover further. Market and consumers' sentiments will continue to be favourable," the MAA said in a statement.

The association said November sales are also likely to be boosted by year-end promotional campaigns.

Despite the up-tick in October, sales of motor vehicles totalled 443,711 in the first 10 months of the year, the MAA said, 5.1 percent lower than at the same point in 2008.

In September, Malaysian auto sales sank 9.2 percent compared to a year ago.
