A police special team from Kedah has been set up to investigate the incident involving a man who was shot dead by the police after he ran amok at Guar Sanji, Perlis last Saturday.

Kedah police chief Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the setting up of the team, comprising police personnel from Kedah, was to ensure that there was no bias in the investigation.

"If the Perlis police were to probe the case, they will probably be accused of bias. So, this is the best decision," he told reporters.

In the 8am incident on Nov 14, Mohamad Taufik Noorzan, 21, who ran amok with a dagger was shot after he attacked a police constable who tried to calm him down.

The man was reported to have ignored a warning shot and continued to act aggressively before another shot was fired which killed him.

The police action in killing the man, however, was questioned by several quarters, prompting the family to lodge a report asking the police to investigate the case.

In an unrelated development, an Islamic pawn shop in in Taman Sena Indah, Kangar, lost jewellery worth some RM7 million and RM68,000 in cash during a break-in in the

early hours of today.

Kangar police chief Acting Supt Abdul Rahman Mohd Noordin said police were alerted about the incident at 12.30pm and had formed a task force to hunt down the culprits.

He urged anyone with information to contact the Kangar police headquarters.

Four members of armed gang detained

In Kuala Lumpur , police detained four members of an armed gang that was actively involved in armed robberies, during two separate raids in Ampang and Brickfields, on Friday.

Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Abdul Jalil Hassan said all the men, aged between 20 and 40, were detained during a raid carried out at 5.45am.

"The raids were carried out following an armed robbery at a shop in Taman Industri, Lembah Jaya, Ampang on Nov 13," he told reporters today.

During the raid, police also recovered a pistol (Walther P99), two magazines with 28 live bullets each, nine hand phones, various types of credit and bank cards plus a Suzuki RG Sport motorcycle.

"We believe the arms found were used for robbing their victims while the items found were stolen from their victims," he said.

With their arrest, police believe they can solve 17 armed robbery cases in Ampang Jaya and its surrounding areas. - Bernama
