BA MPs to discuss Acting Opposition Leader in todays meet

With current Opposition Leader Fadzil Noor indisposed, the Barisan Alternatif (BA) pre-council meeting today will discuss the possible appointment of an Acting Opposition Leader, according to an opposition member of Parliament.

PAS Kubang Kerian MP Husam Musa told malaysiakini that he was still not sure whether the BA MPs will appoint an Acting Opposition Leader as the current session of Parliament will only be held for two weeks.

On the procedure for the appointment, he said that "the position will be given to the opposition party with the most number of seats in Parliament".

When asked, Husam said DAP, which is no longer in the BA, will not be involved in the discussion.

DAP withdrew from BA over its disagreement over PAS' Islamic state stand last September.

Fadzil, who is PAS president and Pendang MP, underwent a heart bypass operation last Monday and is now recuperating at Hospital Univesiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). He has yet to regain full consciousness.

Meanwhile, deputy president Abdul Hadi Awang has taken over Fadzil's duties in the party.

Fadzil succeeded DAP chairperson Lim Kit Siang as Opposition Leader after the 1999 general election. Lim failed to retain his parliamentary seat while PAS performed exceptionally well in the polls that year.
