As Malaysians continue to pack cinemas to catch a glimpse of the earth crumbling in the cataclysmic Hollywood flick '2012', the occurrence of earthquakes in this country is slowly becoming a regular feature.

Although the quakes are mild, the frequency is no doubt a cause for concern.

azlan This morning, Janda Baik, the hillside enclave in Bukit Tinggi, was hit by an earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale.

According to a news report, the Meteorological Department said the epicentre of the earthquake was 9km southeast of Kg Janda Baik, Bukit Tinggi.

The report added that the last tremor felt in Bukit Tinggi was on Oct 8 at about 5.50am. It measured 2.8 on the Richter scale and occurred 25km away from this morning's site.

"We are constantly monitoring earthquake activities via our latest earthquake monitoring system at our 17 seismic stations nationwide," the department had stated in a statement.

While the area of Bukit Tinggi may not be a stranger to earthquakes, Malaysians were however stunned to read that Kuala Pilah in Negeri Sembilan had also felt the ground move.

On Nov 30, a mild earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale shook the town.

The Meteorological Department had said the quake occurred at 12.15am and the epicentre was at 22km east of Seremban.

However, the department said, no tremors were felt as a result of the quake.
