Suara Rakyat Malaysis (Suaram) has warned Pakatan Rakyat states that they too are in its sights, in keeping with its status as a non-partisan monitor of human rights.

kua kia soong Saying that the performance of Pakatan states and their policies are being watched, Suaram founder Kua Kia Soong said this is to ensure that there is no backtracking in Pakatan’s promises to initiate reform.

“If we find that they have backtracked...we will publicise it,” he told journalists today after revealing the main points of Suaram’s annual human rights report on Malaysia.

Kua praised the Selangor government for passing a state bill pushing for repeal of the Internal Security Act and its aggressive stance in declassifying documents and attempting to enact freedom of information (FOI) law.

Saying that Penang still has a long way to go with regard to FOI, he conceded that Pakatan-led states face certain difficulties in implementing reform where federal jurisdiction is involved.

On the area of local democracy, Suaram coordinator Mun Hui acknowledged Perak for pushing the concept of local government elections, which had been held in colonial times.
