The contract of few hundred government employees, which expires on Dec 31 is in limbo, said Cuepacs president Omar Osman.

He said most of them were working with the Education Ministry, state tourism action councils and the Agriculture Department.

Omar said so far, about 200 employees of state tourism action councils complained to Cuepacs that their contracts may not be renewed due to budget constraints.

"We believe the figure will rise. This is a serious matter as their future is bleak.

"Most of them aged between 25 and 30 and are married," he told reporters.

500 employees at stake

Urging the government to renew their contracts, he claimed some employees with state government agencies had their services terminated even before their contract expire.

Omar, who believed the future of about 500 contract employees was at stake, said, however, those who had their contract appointment through the Public Service Council would not be affected.

In another development, he asked the government to postpone the Efficiency Level Assessment (PTK) due to high failure rates.

He said he sought a meeting with the Public Service Department to thrash out the matter. - Bernama
