Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail is disappointed that Perlis has been labelled as a "wahabbi state" by certain quarters lately.
"As the Ruler of Perlis, I am very disappointed with this. It is not good to hurl such accusations through the electronic media or newspapers. It is more appropriate to bring such matters up for discussion.
"If there are practices in the state that do not conform to Islamic teachings, these can be rectified," he said when launching the state-level Maal Hijrah celebrations at Dewan 2020 in Kangar today.
Also present were the Raja Perempuan Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, Perlis Menteri Besar Md Isa Sabu and wife Asiah Asmuni.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also urged Muslims in Perlis not to resort to legal action against those who hurled such allegations as this would not solve anything.
Recently former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin was charged by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) for giving a lecture in the state without certification.
Mohd Asri had also come under attack from various Islamic groups and scholars over his support for the wahabbi teaching.
