The findings of a study on dangerous locations, including landslide prone areas in the Klang Valley, have been submitted to the local authorities responsible for further action.

shaziman abu mansor Works Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor said local authorities can now identify and carry out repair works in the areas involved for the public's safety.

He said the areas involved were those under the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the Selayang Municipal Council and the Kajang Municipal Council.

"The study involved identifying dangerous slopes covering 100 square kilometres of land from Cheras to Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur," he told reporters after handing school uniforms and souvenirs to students who obtained excellent Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results in Tampin today.

The purpose of the study was to map dangerous slopes and allow the government to carefully plan development in the future, he said.

Study cost RM5.5 mil

He said the study, which started on Sept 25, 2007 and ended on Sept 24, 2008 and cost some RM5.5 million, identified 583 dangerous slopes and landslide prone areas around the Klang Valley.

"Of this number, between 215 and 220 of the slopes need serious attention," he said.

However, Shaziman informed that the study was not in-depth and only involved the surface level.

"It can be used for mapping purposes as well as for early reference and screening. The study does not include detail such as the slope's stability which covers land investigation, geological studies and related aspects," he said.

The government has recently decided to declassify the report after coming under pressure from the Selangor government.
