99% of inmates' death due to health problems

Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said that according to the Prisons Department's statistics, 2,555 of the inmates died while undergoing treatment for their ailments, especially HIV.
Other health problems which had claimed the lives of the inmates in hospitals were septicaemia, pulmonary tuberculosis, cancer, heart ailment, blood problem and asthma.
He said this in a written reply to senator Mustafa Kamal Mohd Yusoff who wanted to know the number and causes of death of prison inmates from 2000.
Hishammuddin said only 32 cases or 1.2 per cent of the deaths occurred in prisons.
Investigation reports and post-mortems revealed that of the total, 31 committed suicide while the other one was electrocuted, he added.
