A council of non-governmental organisations (NGO) called Wehdah has sought royal intervention into the 'Allah' controversy.

herald the catholic weekly online 241207 The council today presented a memorandum to the Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, as the head of Islam in the state, objecting to the use of the word "Allah" by other religions.

    

Wehdah chair Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid handed the memorandum to the sultan's private secretary, Elmi Yusoff, at Wisma Darul Aman.

Wehdah, which represented 26 Islamic NGOs, appealed to the sultan for immediate action to be taken to resolve the issue, he told reporters after handing over the memorandum to Elmi.

    

On Dec 31, the High Court ruled that the Catholic weekly magazine, Herald , could use the word "Allah".

    

The Home Ministry yesterday filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal against the ruling. Today, it filed an application to stay the execution of the ruling.
