The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today reminded the prosecution to get a chemistry report as quickly as possible so as not to have the court dismiss the case of five Universiti Malaya (UM) students charged with mischief and trespass at the institution of higher learning in June last year.

Judge Rozana Ali Yusuff gave the reminder after deputy public prosecutor Mohd Mukhzany Fariz Mohd Mokhtar informed the court the prosecution had yet to obtain the report though the case had been filed six months ago.

As a result, the court was forced to postpone the hearing to June 14.

"The court is not in favour of delaying the hearing as it does not want to hamper the studies of the five accused who are in the first and third year at the university," she said.

Earlier, Mohd Mukhzany Fariz said the failure to submit the chemistry report was neither intentional nor aimed at delaying the hearing.

Defence counsel Mohamad Arfizi Mohd Ramli, for the five students, agreed that the hearing be postponed until after the chemistry report had been obtained to ensure a smooth hearing.

He also applied to the court for his clients to be allowed time to sit for their examinations for over a month beginning April.

NONE The five students, from the university's Faculty of Islamic Studies, had claimed trial to attempting mischief using fire, criminal trespassing, and committing mischief by dousing petrol and vandalism at the main entrance of the faculty at about 4am on June 24 last year.

The alleged incident occurred just hours before the premier's wife Rosmah Mansor visited the institution on June 24 this year to launch a donation campaign for Gaza.
