JAKARTA - Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri is due to meet Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Bali next month, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said Tuesday.

Wirayuda told reporters the meeting on the Indonesian resort island was scheduled for August 7-8.

He said that various topics would be discussed but the focus would be Indonesian migrant labor and on cooperation between the two governments.

The minister said the meeting had been scheduled for February but had to be postponed because of the busy schedules of the two leaders.

Millions of Indonesians work in more prosperous Malaysia, mostly as unskilled labor, but most lack proper papers and permits.

Kuala Lumpur has set July 31 as the deadline for all illegal Indonesians to leave Malaysia without being prosecuted.

Malaysia has already deported 40,000 illegal Indonesian workers in the first half of the year. — AFP
