The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will visit two bus depots in Selangor where about 1,000 buses are scheduled to be phased out.

PAC chairman Azmi Khalid said the committe would like to see the condition of the buses which were said to be obsolete and had been kept in the Serendah and Sungai Buaya bus depots for over two years.

"Most of the worn out buses were placed in those depots, but if left there for too long we fear their quality will decline.

"We want to see the condition of the buses as stated in the Audit Reports," he told reporters after chairing a PAC management meeting at Parliament today.

However, he said it was too soon for the PAC to outline any form of action or suggestions until they inspect the vehicles.     

The Audit Report 2008, among others, criticised Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad's (SPNB) asset liquidation procedure including their plan to get rid of 1,139 buses kept at the Serendah and Sungai Buaya bus depots.

According to the report, 459 (40.3 per cent) of the 1,139 buses could be refurbished by either repairing its engine or accessories.

Furthermore, some of the buses have not been used since they were taken over by SPNB in 2004.

The reports also revealed that SPNB, which took over the CityLiner and Intrakota bus companies in a public transport restructuring in 2004, should have repaired the buses and re-used parts that were still in good condition.
