A mosque in Ampang has received a show-cause letter from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) for inviting Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to give a talk during Maghrib prayers last month.

Ampang MP and PKR Women's chief, Zuraida Kamaruddin, said that the Jami'atul Huda Mosque in her constituency was served the notice last week, to which they were required to reply immediately.

The letter was given for allegedly permitting a political lecture by Anwar who lacked the necessary credentials.

Condemning the action, Zuraida said Jais was acting in the extreme by curbing members of the opposition from speaking.

"Jais has done this before and they are doing it again," said Zuraida.

The letter is currently with an officer of mosque, Basri Kali, who has refused to comment on the matter.

An attempt to clarify the matter with the the state's Islamic Department was also unsuccessful.

When contacted by Malaysiakini yesterday, Zuraida said Anwar was on his way to deliver talks in Hulu Kelang and gave a speech at the mosque after the prayer session.

Anwar denied his right

According to her, Anwar only spoke for less than 15 minutes and asked all those present to pray for his safety against the defamation claims in reference to the sodomy charge against him.

She added that the opposition leader should be able to take part in all state activities in his capacity as the state's economic advisor.

She said that she will bring the matter to the attention of the Sultan, if her request for an audience with him is granted.

In January, Zuraida's name was blacklisted by Jais and her name was removed from the panel of a religious forum in Klang.

She was among several political leaders who was present at the lecture of former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin when it was interrupted by Jais which claimed he did not have the required credentials required to give the talk.
