The education ministry has no plans yet to introduce sex education as a separate subject into the existing curriculum.

Parliamentary Secretary for Education Mahadzir Mohd Khir said, "The teaching and learning in terms of sex education have already been incorporated into the curriculums of Health Studies, Science, Biology, Additional Science and Islamic education."

He was replying to malaysiakini 's question on whether a separate subject of sex education would help to curb moral problems.

Approached in the Parliament lobby today, he said that morality concerned one's ability to manage himself or herself, in both mental and physical health.

Earlier, Shaziman Abu Mansor (BN-Tampin) submitted a written question to the ministry on the implications of women teachers outnumbering men on the education system and students' discipline.

In a written reply, the ministry said that the ratio makes no difference as women and men teachers have been given the same training and are therefore on equal footing.

"Irrespective of male or female, the teachers are professionally trained. There are schools where the principal is a woman and doing a good job. There are also women discipline teachers," said Mahadzir, who is also MP for Sungai Petani.

"There is no evidence whatsoever that shows that the problem of discipline in schools is caused by female teachers," he further stated.

Mahadzir said that the education ministry believes it is other factors that cause indiscipline, such as family problems, influence from friends and excessive "freedom in modern life".
