The government is urged to take stern action against owners of vehicles parked on road or expressway shoulder to avoid accidents like that at km 252.3 of the North-South Expressway near Seremba  yesterday which killed six family members.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) adviser Mohd Hamdan Adnan said the presence of stalled lorries along expressways, especially at night, was dangerous to other road users.

The presence of these stalled lorries could cause fatal accidents, he said in response to yesterday's crash where six members of a family were burnt to death when the car they were travelling in crashed into a lorry that was parked on the shoulder of the expressway.

He said regulations on road side parking, especially by heavy vehicles, should be tightened and suggested that in such circumstance, the owners be required to place the emergency signal about 100 metres away from the stalled vehicles as a precaution for other motorists.

Mohd Hamdan also suggested that the expressway concessionaires, as well as the police, to enhance patrols on highways and to ascertain that heavy vehicles which broke down along expressways be towed away as soon as possible.
