The High Court today fixed April 20 for decision on the suit by four students challenging the the federal government's implementation of teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) in 2003.

Counsel Mohamed Hanipa Mydin who represented the four, including the son of oust Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, said judge Mohamed Apandi Ali postponed decision as more documents were needed.

Nizar, 53, who is also Bukit Gantang MP, was present in court together with Mohamed Hanipa and counsel Aminuddin Zulkifli.

     

Mohammad Syawwaal Mohammad Nizar, Mohammad Fadzil Nor Mohamed Rosni, Nur Najihah Muhaimin and Syazaira Arham Yahya Ariff filed a suit for review of the decision claiming that the policy had denied them the right to study two subjects in the national language.

The 2006 suit filed via their fathers urged the government to change the policy in accordance with the federal constitution and the law as it was unconstitutional, invalid and ineffective.

The students argued that PPSMI did not consider the law particularly Article 152 of the federal constitution, the National Language Act 1967 and the Education Act 1996.

There was also a difference in implementation as Year 1 pupils of SJKC (Chinese schools) were taught in two languages - English and Mandarin.

However, the government has since decided to revert back to teaching maths and science in Bahasa Malaysia beginning 2012.
