The Attorney-General's (AG) Chambers will apply for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) of murder suspect Zamil Ahmad Murad, following evidence that he had acted in self-defence.

The shooting coach was charged with the murder of a 34-year-old man in Gong Badak at the Kuala Terengganu magistrate's court yesterday.

Zamil was alleged to have murdered Haikar Iskandar Syed Mazhar near some bushes behind a house at Lot No: 19347 in Gong Badak between 4pm and 4.30pm on Feb 1.

In a statement today, attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail said the decision to apply DNAA was made after a detailed report of the case was provided to the AG's Chambers, and he scrutinised the facts.

"Upon further scrutiny of the facts, I am of the opinion that there is evidence to show that the suspect had acted in self-defence," he said.

Prior to that on Feb 10, the Terengganu Criminal Investigation Department had referred the investigation papers on Haikar Iskandar's death to the office of the state prosecution unit.

Upon perusal of the evidence, the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) concluded that murder was committed and that the suspect be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Abdul Gani said further investigations would be carried out before making a final decision.
