The Shah Alam High Court today dismissed an appeal by a former dean of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sports Science and Recreation Faculty, Md Saberi Md Salleh, against his conviction and sentence for corruption.

Judge Mohd Zaki Md Yassin, in his judgment, also dismissed an appeal by an owner of a company supplying sports equipment, Zaleha Abd Rahman, who was found guilty of abetting Md Saberi.

He dismissed their appeals on ground that Sessions Court judge Zabariah Mohd Yusof had not erred in her judgment.

However, Mohd Zaki granted them a stay of the jail order pending their appeal at the Court of Appeal.

He ordered Md Saberi and Zaleha, who were represented by lawyer Salim Bashir, to file their appeals the latest by tomorrow.

On Oct 15, 2008, Zabariah had sentenced Md Saberi to three years in jail and fined RM10,000 for affirming an invoice for the supply of sports equipment totalling RM138,600 when no equipment had been supplied.

The same penalty was also imposed on Zaleha, who signed the false document, for abetment.

Saberi and Zaleha were found to have committed the offence at the faculty in the UiTM Shah Alam campus between March 24 and April 2, 1999 and punished under Section 16 of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997.
