The 5.1 million Social Security Organisaton (Socso) members will receive their annual statements similar to Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members once the computerisation project is completed.

Socso chief executive officer K Selvarajah said today that in the meantime, they could obtain their statements from the nearest Socso office or via SMS 15888.

He told Bernama that the project was expected to be completed within a year or two as the number of members involved was around 5.1 million.

"We have to update all the addresses and particulars before we issue them the annual statement."

Selvarajah was reponding to complaints from members that in the absence of an annual statement, they were unable to find out whether the employers were contributing to the fund.

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said it had received numerous complaints from workers who claimed that their employers failed to forward the monthly contributions to Socso although they were deducted from their salaries.

Selvarajah acknowledged that Socso had found that 20 per cent of employers in the country were not contributing to the fund.

It is compulsory by law for both workers and employers to contribute to the fund which provides pension and other benefits for workers who are injured and medically boarded out.

MTUC vice-president A Balasubrmaniam said annual statements from Socso would "tremendously assist workers, especially when making claims."
