MCA presidential council will decide tomorrow whether the resolution submitted by vice-president Liow Tiong Lai's faction to urge for fresh polls will be tabled in the coming annual general meeting (AGM).

selangor mca dinner 211108 wong foon meng 2 In addition to the resolution submitted by the splinter group, the party secretariat also received more than 10 proposed resolutions asking for fresh polls, MCA secretary-general Wong Foon Meng told reporters today at the party headquarters after chairing the secretariat’s meeting.

"All resolutions will be submitted to the presidential council tomorrow for final decision," he said, adding that there were 28 proposed resolutions received in total.

He revealed that all the resolutions asking for fresh polls were submitted by individual members.

Clipping presidential powers

The presidential council will determine tomorrow whether the resolutions are in line with party procedures and constitution, he added.

"The meeting today only categorised the resolutions and give our views. Whether they will be accepted by the presidential council, we will know tomorrow."

Liow's faction is attempting to force a vote during the March 7 AGM on whether fresh polls should be held for the party's central committee.

They submitted four proposed resolutions for the AGM to the party headquarters on Tuesday, the first of which seeks the endorsement of the delegates to force fresh polls.

The remaining three proposed resolutions are aimed at changing the party rules to clip the president's powers.

Liow's faction is calling for fresh polls because delegates passed a no-confidence vote against party president Ong Tee Keat at the Oct 10, 2009 extraordinary general meeting.

This is their latest attempt after many months of futile attempts to convince the central committee to resign en masse .

Ong has refused to resign, despite promising to do so should he "lose by even one vote", prompting Liow's faction to revolt in a bid to 'safeguard the party's integrity'.
