Despite always facing the threat of the Home Ministry or police confiscating his books, cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, better known as Zunar, is soldiering on.
His latest work,
Isu Dalam Katak
a book of political cartoons, will be on sale tomorrow.
It's a compilation of works by various artists on current affairs such as the Sodomy II trial, Anwar's infamous ‘black eye' incident and the ‘Abolish ISA' movement.
The book cover draws attention to cartoons in the book, PM dan Katak and 6 Jahanam , which take digs at top government figures who were involved in the Anwar's trial and former Pakatan leaders who have jumped to other political parties.
Isu dalam Katak which comes with the Home Ministry's permit, can be purchased online through the website cartoonkafe.com and bookstores nationwide.
When contacted, Zunar ( right ), with a pinch of sarcasm, said: "I hope my fans will get a copy soon before the government imposes a ban on it."
Just last Saturday, a police team seized tens of Zunar's books from Asahan, a town in Malacca. Books like Gedung Kartun , Perak Darul Kartun , and IFunny Malaysia were taken away.
"The authorities are simply confiscating the books without any proper reason. I hope they will be more liberal in the future. This is a threat to press freedom and cartoonists like me," he said in a statement.
He also urged the authorities to return the books seized and said legal action will be taken on his behalf soon.
Last month, a total of 15 copies of another book - Isu Dalam Kartun - were seized from bookstores in Taman Bertam, Kepala Batas, Kampung Belah Dua and Permatang Pauh, while four copies were also confiscated from Carrefour in Seberang Jaya.
