A day after the death of Hulu Selangor MP, Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad, four or five names have been bandied around by the PKR to defend the seat.

The list could be getting longer day by day but the PKR is expected to announce their candidate at its supreme council meeting on April 4.

One thing is certain, it would be PKR defending the seat.

"I think there is no problem on which of the opposition parties will contest. PAS and DAP are agreeable that it would be PKR," a source within PKR said.

NONE The source added a meeting will be held after the "Campaign to Save Malaysia" talk held at the Kuala Kubu Bharu stadium, tonight, where senior PKR leaders are expected to meet.

Tonight's talk would see Anwar (right) as one of the main speakers, which also include Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

It is learnt several meetings will also be held next week to possibly narrow down the list of candidates while the final decision could be announced at the supreme council meeting.

Among the names bandied within PKR to contest are former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who is also the Pakatan Rakyat coordinator and party supreme council member.

Others are PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, and also another party supreme council member and unionist, Syed Shahrir Syed Mohamed.

MIC candidate

NONE Some PKR members had also expressed that the party should field an Indian candidate as almost 20 percent of the 63,000 plus voters are from the Indian community.

Already MIC has slated its deputy president G Palanival to contest in the seat again as MIC president S Samy Vellu (left) has given his endorsement.

Zainal Abidin passed away due to brain cancer last night. He was former Selangor deputy menteri besar while in Umno. He joined PKR in 2005 after a fallout and defeated incumbent G Palanieval from MIC/BN by a slim 198 majority.

He was buried at the Kampung Melaka Muslim cemetery at 11am today.

With the Election Commission expected to announce the nomination and polling day on April 2, the PKR's supreme council meeting two days later is the likely venue for PKR to announce its candidate.

According to election laws, a by-election must be held within 60 days after the Dewan Rakyat speaker announces a casual vacancy. This will be the country's 10th by-election since the 2008 general election.
